In times past, PTA meetings were a community event. People would come to the meeting regardless of whether they had children in the school, just to find out what was going on. That has not been my experience to date, but it is a model I aspire to.
One important aspect to an active PTA community is an active community. Wiseburn schools are as good as they are because they are neighborhood schools. Children see each other after school, on weekends, and at the store. How wonderful, then, if the adults who care for those children are able to do the same. We are all so busy that many of us don’t even know our neighbors’ names, much less what they do for a living, what gifts they may have to offer, or whether they are in need of ours. I would like to see that begin to change.
Our neighborhood pays for schools through property taxes and additionally through good will in supporting the many fundraising events each school puts on. For people who have no children in our schools, this probably seems excessive. Seriously, aren’t the property taxes and bond measures enough? The answer is No. The PTA raises funds for things that were taken for granted as essential parts of a well-rounded education. Things like P.E., field trips, art supplies and projects, assemblies. At a time when the childhood obesity rate is climbing, imagine doing away with P.E. for lack of funds. Not if we can help it.

Since the neighborhood is so essential to the funding of our schools, I believe it’s important for the people in the neighborhood to feel a sense of ownership in our schools. The best way to do that is to get involved.
Please feel welcome to attend PTA meetings whether you are a member or not, whether you have children or not. We are trying to build an active PTA community this year, and will be experimenting with many different ways to do that. If you have ideas, questions, talents or gifts to share, or would just like to be asked, please don’t hesitate to contact us.
